But, hey, why would you anyways? ; )

Backing up your mobile data

I love how my SidekickII synchronizes my mobile data to the Danger platform. I can cut and paste a direction on PC and view it on the road (I’m still better at typing on my PC keyboard, I know). Another great peace of mind is that the data is backed up and I won’t worry about losing the phone and kiss my address book and notes goodbye. Of course, after the Paris Hilton instance, people were reminded once again the importance of having a good password to secure your private data.

Recently, I came across two services that offer similar service to other phones/platforms: There is FonePIM from NewBay, a Benchmark backed Ireland/US company. Another one is Mobical from Tactel in Sweden. Mobical offers the service free and directly to the consumer, bypassing carriers, which are target customers of NewBay.

After a little digging, I was intrigued by Mobical’s model. First, I have to tell you that, having being in the position of developing and selling software to the carriers, I dread, even just thinking of it, the long process of months and months of RFQs, pilot runs, short list selections, trial runs, and different stages of deployments. Personally, I would rather put all that effort into building a great product to meet the need of the end users than pleasing wall gardened carriers on features they think would be useful for the users. Of course, getting one carrier to sign up could potentially bring in millions of end users instantly and that seems to be where the big money at.

It seems like Tactel is taking a combined approach with its Mobical service.

Tactel doesn’t make any profit from this service; we only use it to develop, test and market new mobile synchronization technology that we sell to our customers: network operators, handset vendors, service providers, etc. That is how we can offer a free service and still make a business, and that is why we are committed to ensuring the privacy, integrity and security of your data.

I like how they put their service out there to serve the end users and stay true to ensure that the technology in Tactel is attractive and then sell the technology to the carriers.

Projecting your phone

Spotted on Gizmodo.

This little device from Project-A-Phone in MA can capture the display of your cell phone or PDA onto your PC. You can then connect a projector to your PC and demo your wireless app. In addition, you can also make use of the captured images or video on your PC to create a great presentation.

A similar product VC-100 of Plus Vision of Japan connects your cell phone directly to a projector through a RGB cable.

These are definitely painkillers for anyone who has tried to demo his or her mobile application to more than two people in one setting.  It would be interesting to find out how these companies promote these cool gadgets. I would place one in every mobile VC’s conference room, a place where moible entreprenuers aggregrate and would definitely appreciate such product.
